Not sure we should be surprised. Hong Kong has had very little infection til Omicron arrived a few weeks ago. 440,609 total cases from the beginning of covid to date with 425,603 currently infected, so it's all coming now. Before a few weeks ago, the largest daily death toll was like 6. So those with vulnerable immune systems were never tested, not until these last few weeks. Must be frightening locally if all you hear about are rising cases and deaths. Still the death rate for this current wave is under a half of 1%, but that will be difficult to put into perspective if their news is anything like yours. Like you mention though, it will be interesting to keep an eye on.
