I just started watching a very controversial documentary on the origins of the Russian revolution. There is an ethnic element to it that I wasn't taught in school. Many hid their ethnicity/religion with fake names. Interesting. Ties into the comments above.
In any case, perhaps we are looking at the Russian/ Ukraine-Europe- American conflict in the wrong way. Perhaps it's really a Christian/ non-Christian conflict. The US and Europe seem to be on the non-Christian side.

That element you refer too was also behind regional battles in Europe becoming WW1 and WW2...
