Those local leaders you are referring to are MS13 and warlords when the prisons empty out. Sex, drugs, booze, firearms, ammo and medicine will be what people are interested in. Better to be among the survivors.

I think you are exactly right. A few years ago, I came across Selco, he survived the Balkan war in the '90s. His account of how it went down, total and rapid collapse, and how he survived, is truly chilling. He teaches survival. I think I'll revisit his work.
Yup. I have a neighbour from Serbia. He knew what this was straight away. We're tight. People will be trading their children and wives for food if they are lucky. I'm staying the fuck out of the way.
Thanks. I hear you and I don't expect any of this to go smoothly. Though if we have community ties where people are finding solutions, for food, and getting shit done and taking care of each other, they will also protect each other. As CAF has said, the next few years will be largely about surviving, and staying out of the chaos. I don't know what it's all going to look like and you may be right - surely cities will be scary places - but we do have some time (less and less by the day) to pull things together and become resilient. If people see a way forward, steps they can take for themselves and families they are less like to turn into angry mobs.
For some reason running through my head right now is the scene from Independence Day when the people are on the top of the building 'greeting' the aliens and they open up and blast everyone.
