First off, Weshaupt was a raging atheist, as his sequential unfolding of the degrees of Illuminism shows.

And he was quite clear that while he despised the Jesuits -- he had his "Adepts" work to get them banned whenever and wherever they could -- he saw the genius of their organizational structure and mission, and imitated it. Satan apes God; his lieutenants ape the saints, like Weshaupt apes St. Ignatius.
Jesuit priest Barruel (cue the sinister music!) traces back Masonry to the slave heretic Manes, who preached repackaged gnosticism, replete with good and bad God, and all the rest. It's probably NOT too coincidental that a man who spent considerable amounts of his life as a slave, and came under the not-so-favorable views of religious and civil authorities, would pass down his watch words of Equality and Liberty to his followers, and who were driven into underground societies.
I, frankly, trace it back, Biblically, to Korah's Rebellion, where Korah and a 250-member band of conspiring men (raised in Egypt as slaves, no less), challenged Moses on the same perfidious grounds as various branches of the Secret Societies do -- using their own watchwords, if you will, Liberty and Equality: they challenge Moses on his unique place in the governance of the People of God, and insists, instead, that God is with the WHOLE people, and that who did he think he was to sit in authority over them so uniquely? Sound familiar?
They challenge Aaron, as fellow members of the tribe of Levi, for exercising the office of high priesthood -- thus the repetitive characteristic of envy of the Devil and his Minions throughout history is played out (as it is throughout history).
This Band, obviously plot together and await the proper moment to spring their trap for Moses and Aaron ... when they wish to replace Moses with themselves and rid themselves of Aaron. And the people, as dumbfounded, stupid, and paralyzed as ever, don't know what to do. So they do nothing.
God vindicates His Plan and defends Moses and Aaron. He casts into hell those who conspired against His chosen agents. Had God NOT done this, for whatever reason, it seems fairly clear that Moses and Aaron would have been disposed of and probably disposed of in the Wilderness. And, if history is prologue, a blood bath would have ensued.
But claiming Masonry is connected to Catholicism, which Catholicism has condemned more times than any other group of evil doers in history, is just obnoxious.
A Catholic is automatically excommunicated who joins any of the Mason/Rosicrucian/Illuminism groups. And that's evidence that the Church is/was involved in its creation?
