Some years ago, our freezer, which was loaded with meat, experienced a summer storm electricity outage. For too long. My husband (I was not in country at that time) had to throw out a lot of $$$ food. Last autumn (2022), attuned to what-might-be-nonsense-but-I-cannot-predict-so-I'll-prepare thoughts, I canned about 100 lb of beef, chicken, pork. Home canned foods do not require tools to open (I can lift the Ball lid with fingernails, usually). It is true that any cooking will send cooking-smells outside of the house, so in a bad situation that would need to be considered.
