Putin is not insane, is not stupid, & will not accept Nato/US nukes on Russia's border, any more than we would accept a Russian puppet government in Mexico with Russian nukes on our border.
For Russia, NATO expansion is an existential threat. What about that simple fact do westerners not see or understand? Every step the US has taken since the collapse of the USSR has been to surround Russia with enemies in order to destroy Russia's sovereignty & steal its resources. They have watched the US empire building for a few decades now, destroying 1 country after either by undermining its government or bombing it into the stone age.
For some odd reason, they refuse to accept the same fate.
