How much health care should a child need? I recall one visit for a check up in 1963 when I was five and no doubt was supposed to get a jab. Skinny as kids should be, my mum was angered when the Dr said "a perfect specimen to fight for Queen and country".

The second was the same year for a dislocation elbow, which took two minutes and I could have fixed myself had I known how simple it was.

The school dentist was once a year, and I regret going now I realise I probably didn't need any of the mercury fillings. It was years later when my mother told me, at 18 years old her dentist had remove all her top teeth for a basic gum infection that could easily have been cured with salt brushing, and more vitamin C in her diet.

It turned out that the government paid dentists by how much harm they did.
