According to his own Tweet, Elon Musk is strongly suggesting that the entire Trump poll was a ruse to ferret out bots on Twitter. In the early hours the poll was above 80% in favor of getting him back. That being said Twitter is a worldwide platform so who knows what the exact stats are although I suspect the internal dashboards would reveal that number.
Fantastic Substack piece btw it’s surreal to see how badly Free Speech in America has collapsed in the last decade. I sincerely hope that the recent mass layoffs and alteration of policies and algorithms at Twitter under Musk will help to drastically alleviate tensions in the short term but it’s still only a partial fix.
If he’s serious about trying to compete with YouTube for long for video or even with Substack for hat matter with long form text then there may in fact be a hope.
That being said I think the future of Free Speech online is Urbit. Curtis Yarvin aka Mencius Moldbug who’s also on Substack as Gray Mirror was involved with it from around 2004 all the way until 2019. It’s a completely decentralized encrypted uncensorable distributed computer that you can now build apps on top of.
Balaji Srinivasan who wrote The Network State recently spoke at their conference Urbit Assembly in Miami a few weeks ago. Well worth a listen because this may be our only technological means out of this mess. When it gets to a point of having a truly decentralized encrypted version of Discord or Slack, then that’ll be the killer app.

Twitter as a whole is a ruse:
Musk's Twitter is nothing more than the continuation of today's Hundred Flowers Campaign 百花齐放
