The only reason albendazole is so expensive despite being off-patent and generic available is that mysteriously, no companies other than the original patent holder, manufacturer it (in the US). Each pharmaceutical manufacturer seems to have a small collection of niche medicines that are generic qualified yet no one (magically) is competing in the market to make them. Medicare sent out a bulletin a while back with a list of thousands of these drugs begging for someone to offer them in a generic form. Not sure how effective the request was….
