Get out of the cities BEFORE that, buy a bit of acreage, drill a well, and grow a garden, raise chickens, and farm 1850s style. Else, you are right - you *can't* live. Or at least you will be at their mercy and have to follow their rules (ALL the shots!) to "earn" food.
